Four Mud Turtles

Four mud turtles, observed from directly behind in a triangular composition that imparts a sense of stability against the cosmic backdrop of distant spiral galaxies and glittering star clusters, are masterfully rendered using a wet-on-wet or wet-on-dry technique. Their forms are sculpted by a crisp, cool twilight hue with three-quarter lighting that creates a low-key dark with selective illumination, which distinctly highlights the juvenile size form and stark blackish shell of one; defines the worn older shell, adorned with patches of algae and a moderately keeled back, of a large specimen for the species; accentuates the flattened carapace tinged with an olive green hue on another; and catches the smooth shell surface, prominent short pointed tail, and a subtle glimpse of yellowish plastron on the fourth, a subadult size individual.
